How to Calculate Square Footage for a Construction Estimate

Measure rectangles, triangles and irregular spaces in square feet, subtract openings consistently and keep a separate material allowance.

Square footage is area. It is the right starting quantity for flooring, wall finishes, paint, roofing and many labor estimates, but it is not a volume. The dependable method is to split the measured surface into simple shapes, calculate each area, then add or subtract them before applying any material allowance.

Rectangles and squares

area in sq ft = length in feet × width in feet

A room measuring 14 ft 6 in by 11 ft 3 in becomes 14.5 ft by 11.25 ft.

14.5 × 11.25 = 163.125 sq ft

Keep the unrounded result in the worksheet and round the final purchasing figure according to the product coverage and package size.

Triangles

triangle area = base × height ÷ 2

Use the height measured at 90 degrees to the base. A sloped edge is not automatically the height. A triangle with a 12 ft base and a perpendicular 5 ft height has an area of 30 sq ft.

L-shaped and irregular areas

Draw a quick plan and divide the space into rectangles and triangles. Label every dimension so that one edge is not counted twice or omitted. Calculate each area separately, then add them.

For a large rectangle with a cutout, it can be faster to calculate the full outer rectangle and subtract the missing portion. Use whichever approach leaves the clearest check trail.

Walls and openings

For a wall, multiply width by height. Add every wall face, then subtract doors and windows only if the estimating method calls for it. On small paint jobs, leaving openings in the quantity can sometimes cover returns, touch-ups and waste; for cladding or panels, openings may need a more exact takeoff.

Write down the rule used. Two estimators can start with identical dimensions and get different answers simply because one deducted openings and the other did not.

Area is not volume

Square footage cannot be converted to cubic yards unless a thickness or depth is known. To calculate concrete, gravel or soil volume:

  1. calculate the area in square feet;
  2. convert depth to feet;
  3. multiply area × depth to get cubic feet;
  4. divide cubic feet by 27 for cubic yards.

Separate the takeoff from the allowance

Keep the measured area and ordering allowance as separate fields. The allowance depends on cuts, pattern, layout, damage, color matching and product packaging—not simply on the room size.

NIST’s US customary unit tables list 144 square inches in a square foot and 9 square feet in a square yard. Use the exact unit relationship, then match the final order to the manufacturer’s stated coverage.
