Roofing Squares and Shingle Bundles Explained

Convert roof surface area to roofing squares, account for pitch and waste separately, and translate the result into shingle bundles using product coverage.

A roofing square is a coverage unit equal to 100 square feet of roof surface. It is not the same as the building footprint and it is not necessarily the quantity to order. The basic estimating sequence is footprint, pitch-adjusted roof area, roofing squares, waste allowance, then product packages.

Convert roof area to squares

roofing squares = roof surface area in sq ft ÷ 100

A measured roof surface of 2,240 sq ft is 22.4 squares before waste.

If the number you have is the horizontal building footprint, it must be adjusted for roof pitch to estimate the sloped surface. Do not multiply a full building footprint by two for a simple gable roof; the footprint already represents the plan area beneath both slopes.

Pitch factor

For a roof with a rise of r inches per 12 inches of run:

pitch factor = √(1 + (r ÷ 12)²)

Multiply the horizontal plan area by the pitch factor. For a 6:12 roof, the factor is about 1.118. A 2,000 sq ft footprint therefore represents about 2,236 sq ft of simple sloped roof surface before overhangs, waste or separate geometry.

Field-measured slope dimensions or a proper roof plan are better than a simplified factor when hips, valleys, dormers, additions or intersecting planes change the geometry.

Add waste after the measured area

Keep the roof area and waste allowance separate. A simple gable roof has fewer cuts than a roof with multiple hips, valleys and penetrations. Manufacturer instructions, layout and installer experience should set the allowance.

For the 22.4-square example, a 10% allowance gives:

22.4 × 1.10 = 24.64 squares

Do not round the measured roof to 23 squares and then apply waste; keep the decimal until package quantities are calculated.

Convert squares to bundles

Many asphalt shingle products are packaged at three bundles per square, but this is not universal. Heavier or specialty products may use a different bundle count or coverage. The correct formula is:

bundles = squares to order × bundles per square for the product

At three bundles per square, 24.64 squares becomes 73.92 bundles, rounded up to 74. Verify the coverage printed on the selected package before purchasing.

Materials that need separate takeoffs

Shingle squares do not automatically provide accurate quantities for:

  • starter course;
  • ridge and hip cap;
  • drip edge;
  • valley material;
  • underlayment;
  • ice-barrier products;
  • flashing and penetrations;
  • fasteners.

Those items depend on linear measurements, product coverage and the project requirements. Use the US unit converter when plans and product sheets use different units.
