How to Calculate Plaster Quantities for Walls and Ceilings

Work out exactly how much plaster you need. Covers skim, bonding, hardwall, and render with coverage rates per bag and pre-calculated room quantities.

How Much Plaster Do You Need?

Ordering plaster is one of those things that seems simple until you get it wrong. Under-order and you're mid-skim with no plaster left and the first batch going off. Over-order and you've got bags sat in the garage absorbing moisture until they're useless. Here's how to calculate it properly for any room.

Step 1: Measure Your Walls and Ceilings

Walls

For each wall:

Wall area (m²) = Length (m) × Height (m)

Add up all four walls (or however many you're plastering). For a standard rectangular room:

Total wall area = 2 × (Length + Width) × Height

Ceilings

Ceiling area (m²) = Length (m) × Width (m)

Deducting Openings

Subtract the area of windows and doors. Don't get too precise here — round to the nearest half square metre.

Example: A room measuring 4m × 3.5m with 2.4m ceilings, one door, and one window:

Walls: 2 × (4 + 3.5) × 2.4 = 36m² Less door: 36 - 1.5 = 34.5m² Less window: 34.5 - 1.8 = 32.7m² Ceiling: 4 × 3.5 = 14m²

Step 2: Understand Coat Thicknesses

Different plaster products are applied at different thicknesses, and this dramatically affects coverage.

Plasterboard Walls and Ceilings (Board Finish / Skim)

If you're skimming over plasterboard, you only need a finish coat:

  • Thickness: 2–3mm (two passes)
  • Product: Thistle Multi-Finish, Thistle Board Finish, or equivalent

Solid Walls — Two-Coat Work

For brick, block, or old plaster that's been hacked off, you typically need an undercoat followed by a finish coat:

Step 3: Coverage Rates Per Bag

This is the critical bit. Here are the coverage rates for the most commonly used plaster products in the UK. You can find detailed technical data sheets on the British Gypsum website:

Calculating Bags

Bags needed = Total area (m²) ÷ Coverage per bag (m²)

Using our example room (32.7m² walls + 14m² ceiling = 46.7m² to skim):

Multi-Finish: 46.7 ÷ 10 = 4.67 → 5 bags

If the same room needs bonding coat on the walls (solid block) and skim on everything:

Bonding: 32.7 ÷ 3 = 10.9 → 11 bags Multi-Finish: 46.7 ÷ 10 = 4.67 → 5 bags

Always Round Up and Add One

Plaster coverage varies depending on the background, your application thickness, and how much you lose in the bucket. Always round up to the next whole bag and add one extra. Running out mid-wall is far worse than having one bag left over.

Skim Only (Plasterboard Walls and Ceiling)

PVA and Preparation

When to Use PVA

  • High suction backgrounds (aerated blocks, old plaster, dry brick) — dilute PVA at 3:1 or 4:1 with water, apply as a primer coat, and let it dry. Then apply a second coat at 1:1 just before plastering (a "wet key")
  • Plasterboard — does not need PVA. Tape and joint the boards, then skim directly
  • Concrete or engineering brick — use a bonding agent (SBR or specific plaster bonding agent) rather than PVA

PVA Coverage

A 5-litre tub of PVA covers approximately 25–30m² as a diluted sealer coat. For the sticky tack coat, coverage is about 15–20m².

Mixing Ratios and Tips

Mixing Plaster

  • Always add plaster to water, never water to plaster
  • Use clean, cold water — warm water accelerates setting
  • Mix to a thick, creamy consistency with no lumps
  • A bag of Multi-Finish needs approximately 11.5 litres of water
  • A bag of Bonding needs approximately 7–8 litres of water
  • Clean your bucket and tools thoroughly between mixes — old plaster remnants will cause the next mix to go off faster

Working Time

Working time reduces in warm weather, in small rooms with poor ventilation, and if your water or tools are contaminated with set plaster.

Weight Considerations

Plaster adds significant weight, especially on ceilings. Here's what you're dealing with:

For ceiling work on older properties with existing lath and plaster, check that the joists and fixings can take the additional load before adding new plaster on top. Storage

  • Follow the manufacturer's storage guidance — British Gypsum's technical support covers handling and storage best practice
  • Store plaster bags off the floor on pallets or boards
  • Keep them dry — moisture ruins plaster before you open the bag
  • Use within 3 months of purchase (check the best-before date on the bag)
  • Once opened, seal the bag tightly and use within days
  • Never use plaster that's gone lumpy in the bag — it won't set properly

Common Mistakes

  • Skimming too thick — 2mm is enough. Going thicker causes cracking and hollowness
  • Not controlling suction — dry backgrounds suck the water out of the plaster before you can work it. Always prime suction backgrounds
  • Dirty tools and buckets — contamination is the number one cause of plaster going off too fast
  • Plastering in direct sunlight or heat — the plaster dries before it sets, causing a weak surface that will craze
  • Under-ordering — running out mid-wall means a visible joint line. Better to have one spare bag than come up short halfway through a ceiling
