Turf & Lawn Calculator

Calculate turf rolls, topsoil, and fertiliser needed for any garden. Supports rectangle, L-shape, and circular lawns with waste allowance.

How to use the Turf & Lawn Calculator

  1. Select the lawn shape — rectangle, L-shape, or circular.
  2. Enter the dimensions in metres.
  3. Set the waste allowance (5-10% is typical for straightforward shapes).
  4. Review the number of turf rolls, topsoil quantity, and fertiliser needed.

Why use this tool

  • Calculates turf roll count based on standard UK turf roll dimensions (approximately 1m2 per roll).
  • Includes topsoil requirements if the existing soil needs topping up before laying.
  • Preparation checklist ensures the ground is properly ready for turf, reducing the risk of failure.

Laying turf is straightforward but the preparation is critical. The ground must be cleared of weeds, levelled, and ideally improved with topsoil or compost. Turf should be laid within 24 hours of delivery in cool weather, or same-day in summer. This calculator works out how many turf rolls you need based on the lawn area and shape, adds a waste allowance for cuts at edges and curves, and calculates the topsoil quantity if you are building up the level. Standard UK turf rolls are approximately 610mm wide by 1640mm long, giving just over 1 square metre per roll — but check with your supplier as sizes vary.
