How to use the Skip Size Guide

1. Select your project type — kitchen refurb, bathroom refurb, extension, clearance, etc.
2. Estimate the volume of waste you expect to generate.
3. Review the recommended skip size and its approximate capacity.

Why use this tool

• Helps you choose the right size first time — too small means paying for a second skip, too large means paying for empty space.

Skip hire costs vary by size, location, and waste type. A 4-yard mini skip suits a small bathroom refurbishment, while a house clearance or extension might need an 8 or 12-yard skip. The most common mistake is hiring too small a skip and needing a second one — which costs more than getting the right size from the start. Remember that plasterboard must be separated from general waste under Waste Regulations, and hazardous materials (asbestos, paint, chemicals) cannot go in a standard skip. If your skip will be on a public road, you also need a skip permit from the local council, which your skip company can usually arrange.
